New Stays

I love the costumes of the Regency Era. I have made several Regency outfits in the past and greatly enjoyed wearing them.

Stays are the foundation for the dresses of this Era. The pair I had was looking pretty bad so I made a new set back over Thanksgiving weekend.
I used Sense and Sensibility's Regency Underthings Pattern. They are made in three layers: two of cotton twill and one of cotton twill interfaced with heavy weight interfacing. They are quilted on both sides, boned with plastic boning from Hancock Fabrics, finished with bias tape and laced with twill tape. I *a-hem!* took the quick way out used metal eyelets rather than doing hand sewn eyelets which is what my last pair had.

For more information on the clothing of the Regency Era you can visit Jessamyn's Regency Costume Companion. For pictures of real Regency garments see Sense and Sensibility or Tidens Toj. For Regency costumes in movies go to Jane Austen Movie Gowns, Eras of Elegance or The Costumer's Guide to Movie Costumes.

Hi Caroline,

I commented on these stays on the S&S forum, but I also wanted to comment here. These stays are so pretty! They look incredibly well-made and surprisingly comfortable. Do you wear a chemise under them? It looks like you just have a tank top on the dress form in these pictures, do you just use that all the time? Thanks for sharing-- you are inspiring!

Thank you all so much!

Olivia, I do wear a chemise under them. I put the tank top on the dress form because I thought the stays would show up better if there was a color underneath rather than something white.

Those are very pretty! I am going to start my stays after Christmas. I can't wait to start. They look and sound so comfortable!
Do the metal eyelets work just as well as the hand sewn ones?

Ashley, I don't think there is really a difference between the two kinds of eyelets except that handsewn eyelets are more period correct but metel eyelets are much quicker to put in.
